But with this article bringing it up....\\n\\nWe've seen consolidation before. EA has been nicknamed unicronic arts after the transformer character who consumes planets. Bioware was a major studio with multiple successful IPs. Visceral Games, Westwood Studios, Pandemic Studios, all companies with highly successful IP, that suddenly lost it when EA was in charge. ABK is itself a mega company made up of 3 of the biggest names in gaming, Activision, Blizzard, and King.\\n\\nWe've seen cycles of consolidation in the game industry. And if you look at the next crop of independent studios after a big consolidation, you find a list of people who left the old smaller companies around the time of the merger. The big studios are financially locked into a creative dead end, unable to create something new as shareholders demand every game be the biggest sales hit in history, forcing name recognition and trend chasing over substance. And distribution solutions inherent in computers and video games have meant independent gaming has had a better leg up than the literature and motion picture industries for independents.\\n\\nI hate to see quality game development studios cash out as their IP has everything sucked out until the studio is sucking on the marrow of its former glory. But I think, given the history, the consolidation we are seeing will result in a corresponding uptick of new quality independent studios, with new, quality IP.\",\"embeds\":[{\"type\":\"article\",\"url\":\"https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/02/how-the-games-industry-shake-up-could-play-out/\"}]},{\"id\":\"947940545127395368\",\"timestamp\":1646077037842,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"deadspatula\",\"content\":\"Ack. final note I was going to make, for all the talk of consolidation, the two big acquisitions, of AAA studios? Both of those studios have lost a lot of their luster with fans. ABK's merger can be seen as a way to dodge criminal accountability for top executives who will exit with golden parachutes once the merger finishes, and Bungie is far from its Halo days. Neither of them could be described as companies in ascendency or at their peak. Which is to say, I don't think the ABK acquision is a good indicator of say, EA or Ubisoft selling out.\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948249480950591589\",\"timestamp\":1646150693882,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"BentFranklin\",\"content\":\"Antivax hashtags just aren’t being used for days while Russia limits access to Twitter and redirects bots to cover the war instead\\nhttps://twitter.com/BadVaccineTakes/status/1498659829522518021\",\"embeds\":[{\"type\":\"rich\",\"url\":\"https://twitter.com/BadVaccineTakes/status/1498659829522518021\"},{\"type\":\"rich\",\"url\":\"https://twitter.com/BadVaccineTakes/status/1498659829522518021\"},{\"type\":\"rich\",\"url\":\"https://twitter.com/BadVaccineTakes/status/1498659829522518021\"}]},{\"id\":\"948269038394540032\",\"timestamp\":1646155356740,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"Mike Masnick\",\"content\":\"the original tweet was deleted for being misleading bent...\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948269113241911297\",\"timestamp\":1646155374585,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"Mike Masnick\",\"content\":\"https://twitter.com/klharlow/status/1498697399153405957\",\"embeds\":[{\"type\":\"rich\",\"url\":\"https://twitter.com/klharlow/status/1498697399153405957\"}]},{\"id\":\"948286899590668338\",\"timestamp\":1646159615181,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"TNSe\",\"content\":\"whats this techdirt membership activation thing?\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948288253486833716\",\"timestamp\":1646159937975,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"Mike Masnick\",\"content\":\"part of our move to the new platform...\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948289593013321728\",\"timestamp\":1646160257343,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"TNSe\",\"content\":\"ahh\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948289631865176095\",\"timestamp\":1646160266606,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"TNSe\",\"content\":\"you never know what's spam or not, thanks 😄\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"948292834669264927\",\"timestamp\":1646161030214,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"Leigh Beadon\",\"content\":\"Yup, Insiders who made their purchase with a different email from their account may receive a new activation link (at the *purchase* email)\\n\\nFor the moment, you'll need to re-activate to get your subscriptions back. The company has via various public statements as well as internal memos indicated they are not a going concern (I am using the accounting term for the situation they describe, meaning they do not have sufficient capital or income to assume they can meet ongoing financial obligations, an auditor using that term is often the kiss of death for recovery). That the reason they shut down was to determine how to fairly pay out creditors, employees, and customers. That debt to creditors would be pre-existing. The real question is if the financial collapse comes due to losing the Intel sponsorship, extensive refunds from when they burned their goodwill, a pretext to dodge a raft of state and federal criminal charges and or fines, or if the collapse was already imminent. Reports indicate their bank accounts were frozen, probably as a result of the tax evasion scheme that got the SF business license suspended - itself not a sign of previous financial stability. The bank freeze probably would have shut down the company, but its again hard to say if this situation kicked some bureaucrat's ass into gear, or if the bank freeze was already happening.\\n\\nTL;DR - a lot of what we have learned in the last week and the public statements of the company indicate a rocky financial state prior to the giveaway, but how the illegal lottery scheme and its implosion impacted their financial collapse is unknown. Likely we will never know if the debts would have been surmountable under other circumstances, but I definitely think the press coverage linking finances to the backlash is overstating causation.\",\"embeds\":[]},{\"id\":\"951505425533140992\",\"timestamp\":1646926971563,\"modified\":0,\"handle\":\"deadspatula\",\"content\":\"The more I learn about the company, the more I think the lottery imploded because of the financial situation, rather than the other way around.\",\"embeds\":[]}]"]
